Alectra Utilities (formerly Guelph Hydro) has been advised that some customers have received calls today threatening disconnection and demanding immediate payment by credit card for an overdue Guelph Hydro account. The caller sounds very professional and threatens that power will be cut off within 45 minutes.

Alectra Utilities (formerly Guelph Hydro) reminds customers to beware of scam calls asking for immediate payment. Customers should never give their account number or credit card number to callers. They should hang up and call Alectra Utilities / Guelph Hydro at 519-822-3010 during normal business hours to report the call and verify their account. Registered online account users can also verify their account online 24/7.

Alectra Utilities / Guelph Hydro does not disconnect customers without prior notice. The company mails disconnect notices, hand delivers notices, makes phone calls and knocks on the door when a disconnection is about to take place.

Customers are encouraged to warn friends and family members of this scam. If they receive a scam call, report the call to the local police and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online.
