Danby Appliances will be hosting a one-day event at their Guelph warehouse to assist GlobalMedic in packing emergency food kits to be sent to families in Syria who are affected by the war.

Organizers are looking for 100 volunteers to help pack the kits on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Danby location at 5070 Whitelaw Rd.

Global Medic sends kits that deliver a calorically dense meal, while maintaining the dignity of the beneficiary by offering a culturally appropriate solution, says a news release.

The emergency food kit is a sealed bag of dried food that can be prepared easily by the recipient, and can also be stored in a prepositioned supply if necessary.

People can register to help here.

With the war in Syria now in its ninth year, civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict. Due to the fighting, over 13.1 million Syrians are in need, said a news release.

Of those in need, nearly half – or 6.5 million – are food insecure. The decreasing availability of food and rising costs have led many families to reduce the number of meals per day and the amount of food consumed. In conflict zones, malnutrition reduces a person’s ability to fight off deadly diseases.
