The food court in the Old Quebec Street Shoppes is going up for sale.

The roughly 11,000-square foot food court is owned by the City of Guelph and it has decided to sell it.

Katherine Hughes, associate solicitor for the city, said they will be contacting a realtor and arriving at a sale price shortly.

The city has not set an asking price. That will happen after discussions with the realtor.

The space does have a limited use.

"It's limited as a food court in use because there's a restrictive covenant on the title," Hughes said.

Hughes said there is a clause in the agreement the city has with the owners of Old Quebec Street Shoppes that allows them to match any offer to purchase the food court if they so choose.

"The restrictive covenant does have a provision in it that gives them (Old Quebec Street Shoppes) the right to match any offer," Hughes said.

The food court has been virtually empty for several years, save for The Jade Unicorn, a Chinese food outlet that operated there for 29 years before being evicted by the city last December.

The Jade Unicornwas the food court's lone occupant for roughly 10 years.

When the mall originally opened in 1984 as the Eaton's Centre the food court was full and bustling, but gradually declined. The city took ownership of the property in 1999 to build the Sleeman Centre and the food court remained part of the Sleeman Centre when the city sold the rest of the building in 2003.
