FERGUS - Downtown Fergus residents may experience discoloured water as a result of a fire hydrant flow test overnight on Thursday.
The test is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. Thursday and finish at 5 a.m. Friday morning, the township said in a media release. The overnight timing is designed to reduce inconvenience to residents. Water discolouration is possible while the test is ongoing and for several hours afterward, the township said.
Over time, naturally occurring minerals along with iron and manganese, which is found in groundwater can build up as sediment in the pipes. When fire hydrants are used, this sediment can be stirred up due to the high water velocity and high water volume used.
If discoloured water is experienced, residents are urged to turn on the cold water tap nearest to your water meter and allow the water to flush slowly for several minutes until it runs clear. If after 12 hours, your water still appears discoloured, please contact Centre Wellington Infrastructure Services at (519) 846-9691, Option 2.
