The Guelph Y launches the 22nd Annual Women of Distinction Season with the announcement of Sue Smith as Honorary Chair.

Sue Smith is a singer, composer, producer, teacher and community builder who has been an active contributor to the local and national arts communities for over 30 years (for Sue’s full bio, please click here).

"I am so very honoured to join in the launch of this new Women of Distinction season – I am looking forward with anticipation to discovering, witnessing and celebrating the exceptional accomplishments of the women of Guelph," said Smith.

The Guelph Y and Women of Distinction Alumnae Committee invite members of the community to attend the Launch Reception, sponsored by TD Bank Group, which will celebrate the start of the 2017 Women of Distinction season.

This event takes place at Cutten Fields on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016 from 6:30-9 p.m. Inspired by the format of TED Talks, the Launch Reception will engage and captivate the audience by featuring three Women of Distinction alumni who are making a difference in our community:

  • Maggie Baratto will discuss how she and her team are supporting women exiting human trafficking, the sex trade and addiction
  • Anita Acai will address how women can deny “Queen Bee syndrome” and instead, build strong support networks by advocating for each other
  • Rosemary Fernandes-Walker will share key learnings from a Parenting Support Group here in Guelph – what you can do when feeling hurt, disrespected, embarrassed and scared by your child’s behaviour

Tickets are $30 and include a cocktail reception with a cash bar.

In addition to connecting with fellow community-minded individuals, the Launch Reception will provide attendees with details of the 2017 nomination process.

The Guelph Y and Women of Distinction™ Alumnae Committee invite members of the community to nominate the important women in their lives for this prestigious award.

Starting on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, the 2017 nomination package will be available online at www.guelphy.org, or in person at the Guelph Y, located at 130 Woodland Glen Dr in Guelph. Nominations are due by Jan. 31, 2017.

On Thursday, May 4, 2017, the Guelph Y’s Annual Women of Distinction Fundraising Event will be celebrating its 22nd year. Each year, the event recognizes and celebrates the achievements of outstanding women in our community among all industry sectors.

Join the 2017 Honorary Chair, Sue Smith, on Nov. 3 to learn how to nominate a 2017 Woman of Distinction. For more information about Women of Distinction™, please visit www.guelphy.org/y-in-the-community/women-of-distinction.

This year, proceeds from the Women of Distinction™ Fundraising Gala go towards three YWCA community programs that provide support to young girls, teenage mothers and women with breast cancer in Guelph and Wellington County:

  • Power of Being a Girl -- for one day in October, the Guelph Y brings together 160 grade 7 and grade 8 girls from Guelph and the surrounding areas to discuss matters that affect girls and young women in our community such as relationships, body image, healthy living and self-esteem
  • The Teenage Parents Program (TAPPs) supports the personal growth and development of pregnant and parenting teens and their families
  • Encore is a free and unique holistic program, open to all community members, and is designed specifically for women who have fought breast cancer at any time in their lives
