Regular gas prices in Guelph dipped to around 80-81 cents per litre at some stations on Thursday, the lowest price seen so far this year.

“I saw the '80.1' on the sign and turned my truck around,” said Josh Albano, a business owner in Fergus, as he filled his tank at the Highway 6 Pioneer station just north of Guelph.

“I have a small business and I’m driving throughout the day,” Albano said. “So if I’m paying $100 instead of $150 to fill up, that’s a little bit of savings for me.”

The station’s owner Malkiet Singh said the price for a litre of regular gasoline fell to just under 80 cents at some point last year, before quickly rising in price. But Thursday’s price was the lowest seen in several months.

Oil prices were at $38 Canadian per barrel Thursday, compared to nearly $62 at the same time in 2015.

“It’s just more beneficial to the consumer,” Singh said of the cheap gas. “It doesn’t really mean people will drive more. Most are just driving back and forth to work. But the savings are a big benefit to families.”

The website www.tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com analyses gasoline market conditions across the country and predicts price trends. Guelph’s gas has been on a downward trajectory this week, but is expected to increase by an average of two cents by Friday, according to the website.

“Of course I like it,” said motorist Wil Carter. “It’s just a nicer feeling when the price is cheaper.”
