The former Baker Street and Wyndam Street parking lots are undergoing an archaeological study in preparation for redevelopment.

An archeological study of the former Baker Street parking lot has been put on hold as wintry weather sets in, city officials announced on Tuesday.

The effort, which has unearthed 83 grave shafts and 37 distinct discoveries of human remains so far at the former cemetery site, is slated to get back up and running in April, with completion expected in June.

At this point, about 65 per cent of the site has been excavated, the new release states. Also included is the small Wyndham Street parking lot which sites directly beside the main lot.

There have been no new grave shafts or bone fragments found since the city issued an update on Dec. 14.

Once the archeological clearance work is completed – something that’s needed for the Baker District redevelopment project to move ahead next spring – all remains found will be documented and re-interred at Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery.

The parking lot was permanently closed at the end of September in order to allow for the archeological work to get underway.

Used as a cemetery for 26 years, the triangular block that is the currently Baker Street municipal parking lot was the site of an all-faith cemetery from 1827 to 1853.
