Winter revisits Guelph (10 photos)

Winter returns with a vengeance.

A blast of winter returned to Guelph on Sunday and continued through the night as the city slept. On Monday morning it looked like a full return of the cold season, as people were everywhere scraping ice from car windows and brushing about 10 centimetres of snow from vehicles.

Underneath the fresh snow on streets and sidewalks was a treacherous layer of ice that made walking precarious and vehicles swerve. Some continued to ride their bicycles, having had a taste of warm spring just a few short days ago.

“We had a mild winter for the most part, so I think we’ll survive,” said Perrin Valli, as he walked his dog Monday morning in the Exhibition Park area. “I’m hopeful spring is very close.”

Others were a bit less accepting of the early-April return to winter. One man said as he shoveled his driveway that his thoughts on the subject would not be fit for printing.

“I’m not very happy,” said Melissa Sheflin, as she trudged through the snowy sidewalk in her neighbourhood. “We had way too many teases through the winter, and now this. But next week it’s suppose to be plus 20 weather, so I’ll be happy then.”

The temperature dropped overnight to around -10 C and was a frosty -7C by 8 a.m. This week, temperatures will remain well below the seasonal average of 9C during the day and -1 C at night.

For Monday, Environment Canada called for periods of snow in the morning, with sun and cloud throughout the day, winds gusting up to 50 km/hr, with a low of -12C overnight. Tuesday should see sun and cloud, with a high of 1C.
