Wyndham Street gets new angled parking spaces

New temporary parking spaces on Wyndham Street as street goes down to two lanes

Angled parking has come to one side of Wyndham Street North.

The change sees 34 angled parking spots on the west side of the street between Woolwich Street and Quebec Street, increasing  to 41 when patio season ends and the on-street patios on the section of Wyndham are removed.

This is an addition of 21 new spaces to the previous 20 spaces on the west side of Wyndham Street.

Previously the street had parallel parking on both sides of the street. Wyndham Street will be reconfigured to two lanes, one lane in each direction with angled parking on the west and the original parallel parking remaining on the east.

This is only a temporary parking solution, since the parking will go back to parallel parking and there will be four lanes, two in each direction again at the end of the summer of 2023.

“In order to implement the angled parking stalls we had to reduce the lane widths just to accommodate the required width for the angled stalls and make everything work,” said Paul Hutchison, city traffic engineering engineering and transportation services supervisor.

He said angled parking on both sides of the street would be too tight even with the space from lane removal.

The usual two-hour limit remains in place.

“There’s definitely a desire for more parking in the area especially with the Baker Street project that’s underway, so we’re really just trying to add parking stalls where we’re able to help manage that,” said Hutchison.

Baker Street previously had a municipal parking lot and there was Wyndham Street parking lot, both closed on October 1, 2021. There is now a construction site on the former parking lots to build Baker District. In an article previously reported by GuelphToday businesses in the area expressed concerns over the lack of parking for their customers once the parking lots close.

The Baker District development will include a new main library, two buildings for 371 residential units, commercial and public space.

The site will also have 156 parking spaces.
