Days before Guelph-Eramosa Township is set to hear a motion looking to dismiss the application to build a large glass plant just outside of Guelph, the company is advertising for people to work at it.

Xinyi Canada wants to build a 2 million square foot float glass plant on County Road 32 just north of Highway 124 outside Guelph's western border.

There has been outcry among many residents of the township, who feel it is not suited for that location for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it does not fit the current zoning of the property. There are also environmental, safety and traffic concerns.

On Monday Guelph-Eramosa Township council is set to discuss a motion put forth by councillor David Wolk that asks council to reject the application based on the fact that the Xinyi plant does not conform to the "dry use" definition of the current zoning.

In anticipation of a large turnout, that meeting has been switched to Parkwood Gardens Community Church at 501 Whitelaw Rd. in Guelph.

Xinyi has said it will use over 1 million litres of water daily as part of its manufacturing process and that its studies show that amount of water taking will not affect the wells of area residents.

Xinyi Canada has been running full page advertisements in the Wellington Advertiser newspaper for the past several weeks.

This week they invited people to submit resumes for jobs at the proposed plant, saying that "We are building our talent pool now" and that "qualified candidates will be contacted when suitable openings become available."

The company says it is seeking engineers, technicians, operators and staff as well as management.
