Yes We Cannabis! Guelph set to party on the day pot becomes legal

'Join us for a night of celebration, food, music, drink, and (possibly) a doobie' says organizer

Wednesday marks the beginning of legalized marijuana in Canada and Guelph is having a party to celebrate the occasion.

Yes We Cannabis! A Marijuana Liberation Celebration happens Oct. 17 at the eBar.

Co-owner and organizer Ben Minett said it's a one-shot chance to celebrate a cultural change.

"The idea came up about a month ago," Minett said. "A friend of mine that works in the (medical marijuana) industry said 'do you mind hosting a get-together and I said 'sure, let's do it.' Then it just sort of snowballed."

Minett said the idea is just to have some fun and mark the occasion with a party.

"We're in a fairly unique place in history because it's never been legal before," he said. "It just seems that a lot of people are going to be able to be more true to who they are."

"Victory speeches,"  DJ Todd Britton and Jamaican food will be part of the festivities. MPP Mike Schreiner is expected to make a speech.

Pot smoking will likely be part of the night, but not inside the bar and only where tobacco smoking is allowed, Minett said.

"You won't be allowed to smoke inside, but you can smoke wherever you can smoke cigarettes.

"We wanted to make it so there is good live music and food to celebrate, then if people want to partake they can go outside and do that, then have a really nice musical and culinary experience."

Another event, called the Legalization Celebration will be happening around the same time at the former DLR store at  54 Carden Street. That 19-and-over event gets underway at 5:30 p.m.

Minett said the response to the Yes We Cannabis party has been positive.

"It's been fairly positive, but it's been fairly interesting as well," he said, adding that he had trouble promoting the party on Facebook because of their universal rules surrounding "illegal" drugs.

"I've been talking with them and told them that it won't be illegal in Canada starting on Wednesday," he said.

Tickets for the eBar event are $10 and $8 for students and those who bring a donation to the Guelph Food Bank. They can be purchased in advance at The Bookshelf.
