There will be no varsity sports on the University of Guelph campus – or any other university campus – this winter.

Ontario University Athletics annouinced Thursday that it has cancelled all sanctioned sport programming and championships up to March 31.

"This conclusion was based on provincial public health guidelines and with the health and well-being of all OUA participants at the forefront," said a news release.

Gryphon varsity teams will continue their return to train protocols with guidance from local public health officials. The Department of Athletics will continue to provide student-athlete support services including the Student-Athlete Mentoring Program, Gryphon Leadership Academy, counseling services, and sports medicine.

The release said the U of G will not make any decisions regarding the possibility of exhibition/non-conference competition until the new year.

"We will continue to closely monitor the ongoing health considerations and viability for exhibition/non-conference competition during the winter semester based on the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the safe delivery of University sport. These decisions will be based on a number of factors and will be made in consultation with provincial and public health authorities and the University of Guelph. We continue to be committed to ensuring there is a safe sport environment for all our student athletes, coaches, and support staff."

The varsity fall semester had already been cancelled.
