City recognizes Guelph's Special Olympic medalists

The City of Guelph officially recognized five Guelph athletes that won medals at the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

The games took place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from March 14 to 21.

Jennifer Allen won gold in 10 pin bowling, Eva Bell won silver in the 200 metre run and bronze in the shot put and three athletes won bronze in basketball: MacKenzie de Jonge, Nathan Riley and Sheldon Riley.

"The experience was amazing," Special Olympics community coordinator Lori Savage told city council as they were honored before Tuesday night's council meeting.

"We had 109 athletes go from Canada and five were from Guelph," Savage said. "They treated our athletes like kings and queens."

Mayor Cam Guthrie lauded the athletes.

"It's an absolute pleasure to recognize these atheltes for their outstanding efforts and achievements," Guthrie said before giving each athlete a city medal.
