Coolsaet, Hedican, Godry to enter Gryphon Hall of Fame

Doug Dodd also being inducted in coaches category along with two teams

Olympian Reid Coolsaet headlines this year's inductees into the Guelph Gryphons Hall of Fame.

Wrestler and rugby star Tara Hedican and football standout Lou Godry are the other two athletes being inducted this year during a September ceremony.

Long-time volleyball coach and administrator Doug Dodd enters in the coaching category.

The 1994-95 women’s hockey team and men’s swimming teams from 1960-65 will enter the hall of fame in the team category.

Coolsaet is one of the most decorated runners in Gryphon history. During his collegiate career he was a six-time All-Canadian and twice named the University of Guelph Male Athlete of the Year.

He was a World University Games 5,000-metre silver medallist and a 10-time national champion in cross country and track and field. He represented Canada at the 2012 London Olympics finishing 27th overall in the marathon event.

For four years Godry was a fixture on the field for the Gryphon football team. After joining the team in the 1983 season, he quickly established himself as one of the best lineman in school history. He was named an OUA first team all-star in all four of his seasons and was twice named a CIS first team All-Canadian. He also helped lead the Gryphons to a Vanier Cup title in 1984.

Representing Canada on numerous occasions, her career was highlighted by a World Junior Championship in 2001 and a Pan Am gold medal in 2003.

Hedican is a dual sport inductee for women’s rugby and wrestling. One of the best wrestlers in Gryphon history, she won four OUA and three CIS gold medals in the 65kg weight class. A three-time CIS first team All-Canadian, Hedican was twice named the CIS Outstanding Female Wrestler of the Year

As a rugby player, she was twice named to the OUA Russell Division all-star team.

Dodd worked for the University of Guelph Department of Athletics for a total of 36 years serving as the Head Men’s Volleyball Coach from 1970-75 and then once again from 1980-2006.

On top of his volleyball coaching duties at the U of G, Dodd served as assistant basketball coach for two seasons and head coach for two more.

The 1994-95 women’s hockey team will become the second women’s hockey team inducted into the Gryphon Hall of Fame. This team finished the regular season with a 12-2-1 record and were crowned OWIAA champions, their first title since 1973-74.

The Gryphon Hall of Fame will also be inducting five Gryphon men’s swimming teams who represented the University from 1960 through to 1965. During this five-year span the Gryphons ran the pool winning all five OIAA swimming titles.
