Gryphon women earn OUA honours

University of Guelph Gryphons goaltender Valerie  Lamenta was named OUA player of the year on Wednesday and coach Rachel Flanagan the coach of the year.

Lamenta, a second year player from Montreal, is the second Gryphons women's hockey player in program history to earn the title of OUA Player of the Year, joining Amanda Parkins who received the same honour following the 2012-13 season.

Lamenta led the country this season in goals-against average (0.99), save percentage (.957) and win percentage (.889). Shefinished the season with a 21-2-1 record.

Flanagan, who is in her 9th season as head coach of the Gryphons women's hockey program, helped guide the Gryphons to the number one spot spot in the CIS rankings for the first time in program history. Sunday they play for the OUA title.

Three Gryphons were named first team all-stars: Averi Nooren, Leigh Shilton and Lamenta.
