Gryphons defence keeps them in the playoff hunt

Six interceptions key big win in Waterloo

WATERLOO - The Guelph Gryphons have their defence to thank for still being in the playoff hunt.

The Gryphon defence had six interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns, to record a 27-24 come-from-behind victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday afternoon.

The win leaves Guelph with a 3-3 record.

They have a bye week next weekend.

Dotun Aketepe had two of the interceptions, including one in the third quarter that he ran back 69 yards for a touchdown. In the first quarter Guelph’s Job Reinhart ran a pick back 72 yards for a touchdown.

Trailing 24-10 at halftime, Guelph scored 17 unanswered points in the second half to pull out the win.

Jewan Jeffrey scored what proved to be the winning score on an eight-yard run with 6:35 left in the game.

Guelph had just 269 yards in total offence, 143 of that on the ground.

Quarterback Theo Landers was 16 for 31 passing for 149 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
