University of Guelph Gryphons goaltender Valerie Lamenta has been named Canadian university player of the year.
Lamenta, a Montreal native, becomes the first Gryphon to ever win the award, which was announced at the CIS awards banquet on the eve of the CIS championships.
Guelph will play a quarter-final game at the championships at 1 p.m. Thursday against St. Thomas.
The mechanical engineering student led the country with a 0.99 goals-against average, .957 save percentage and 16-2 record.
Gryphons Leigh Shilton and Averi Nooren were named CIS second team All-Canadians. Nooren scored a team-high 14 goals during the regular season while fifth-year defenceman Shilton was one of the league's top point getters amongst defencemen with 16.
