The Guelph Gryphons came up short in their bid for their first ever national championship.

The top-seeded Gryphons lost 2-1 in a shootout to the fourth-seeded University of  British Columbia T-Birds in the semifinals Saturday in Calgary.

It took eight rounds of the shootout to decide the winner, with the T-Birds' Haneet Parhar winning it when she went backhand high on the blocker side of Gryphon goaltender Valerie Lamenta. That gave UBC a 2-1 win in the shootout, which came after a 10-minute sudden-death overtime solved nothing.

UBC will now face either St. Mary's or Montreal in Sunday's final.
