Gryphons take two gold at OUA wrestling championships (12 photos)

Women finish second, men third in overall team standings

The Guelph Gryphons wrestling teams captured a pair of gold medals at the OUA Wrestling Championships in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday.

Overall the Gryphon women placed second while the Gryphon men placed third at the championships, which were hosted by Algoma University.

Third-year wrestler Oren Furmanov won gold in men's 54kg and Tyson Frost did the same in the 120kg class. Furmanov defeated Brock's Sam Jagas in a 3-1 decision, while Frost topped Western's Kyle Bonk in their gold-medal match by the same score.
Gordon Watkins earned silver at 100kg.\

Guelph native Elvir Uzunovic moved up to the 61kg weight class and repeated his bronze medal performance from last year's OUA championships when he placed third in the 57kg. Rookie Alexandre Chaves won bronze in the 65kg division.
Other bronze medalists included Benjamin Bradford (76kg), Elora's Daniel Humphrey (82kg) and Wassim Ghadban (90kg).

On the women's side, Natassya Lu (48kg), Jade Papke (51kg), defending OUA and CIS champion Alison Carrow (67kg) and Gracelynn Doogan (72kg) all won silver medals.

The Brock Badgers captured the overall men and women's titles, with McMaster finishing second on the men's side.
