The hockey bloodlines run deep in Logan Morrison’s family.
Morrison was the first local chosen in the Ontario Hockey League draft on Saturday, selected in the first round, 18th overall, by the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Morrison’s uncle is former NHLer John Cullen and his grandfather is former NHLer Barry Cullen. His brother Mitch was drafted by the Saginaw Spirit in 2016.
“Thrilled right now,” said Morrison when contacted at home Saturday afternoon.
He followed the draft online with his family and brother at home.
“I wasn’t expecting it, but it when I heard my name called it was just such an honour and such a surreal moment for me and my family. It was great,” Morrison said.
The 5-foot-8, 145-pound Morrison scored 38 goals and added 48 assists in 36 games this season with the Guelph Jr. Gryphons.
Morrison said he knew Hamilton was serious about him when they brought him down to the their rink for a visit during the season.
“I knew Hamilton was interested because I went down there and met with all their management,” he said.
“When they bring you down, obviously they’re interested.”
It was a great day overall for that Guelph Minor Hockey team, with six different players being chosen.
“It’s nice that I got chosen by a team only 40 minutes away. Being close to home is definitely a big thing for me,” Morrison said.

“It was great to see my teammates get selected. I wouldn’t have got drafted myself if it wasn’t for them,” he said.
