Guelph Royals fall to 1-2, home opener set for Saturday

Fall behind 9-0 to Welland before eventually losing 9-6

WELLAND – The Welland Jackfish built up a 9-0 lead then held on late as they downed the Guelph Royals 9-6 Thursday night in Intercounty Baseball League action in Welland.

Both teams are now 1-2 on the young season and willl meet again Saturday afternoon at Hastings Stadium in Guelph at 1 p.m. in what is the Royals home opener.

The Jackfish scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed.

The Jackfish then added one run in the second inning, two in the third and one in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to cruise to the win.

Royals designated hitter Mike Cecchetto had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Royals offensively. Connor Morro and Brandon Leroux each had two hits for Guelph.

Royals starter Kyle Thomas was credited with the loss, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits over four innings.
