Guelph Royals split first two games of 2022 season

Beat Hamilton Sunday, fall to London Monday in pair of road games

The Guelph Royals home opener on Saturday was called off after tree limbs on old maples down the right field at Hastings Stadium snapped off in the storm. Guelph played Sunday and Monday.

LONDON – The Guelph Royals went 1-1 in their first two games of the 2022 Intercounty Baseball League season.

Guelph was supposed to start its season at home Saturday, but that game had to be postponed after tree limbs snapped off large maple trees down the right field line during the storm and landed on the field.

On Sunday they opened in Hamilton, downing the Cardinals 6-4 on the strength of three hits from Dalton Pompey, a home run by Sean Reilly and an outstanding start by Claudio Custodio.

Custodio allowed just one hit and walked no one in seven innings.

Reilly also had a double and finished the day with four RBIs.

Jeff MacLeod also homered for Guelph.

Monday afternoon, the Royals are back in action against the defending IBL champions the London Majors. Game time in London is 1:05 pm 

Sunday in London the Royals were held to just six hits in a 6-1 loss to the defending champion London Majors.

Guelph's lone run came off a London error.

Ethan Hammond had two hits for Guelph, including a double. Emilis Guerrero took the loss on the mound, giving up five earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three and issued one walk.  

The Royals play in Barrie on Tuesday then host the Brantford Red Sox Saturday at Hastings Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
