Guelph Storm takes sniper Zhilkin in the first round of OHL draft

Centre from Toronto Marlies program had 32 goals in 69 games last year

The Gueph Storm chose sniper Danil Zhilkin with its first pick in the OHL Priority Selection Saturday morning.

Zhilkin, a 5-foot-11, 178-pound centre, scored 32 goals and had 25 assists in 69 games with the Toronto Marlboros minor midgets last season. He also had 66 penalty minutes.

OHL Central Scouting said Zhilkin is a "skilled player with the ability to make plays that most can't. He is creative and plays an unselfish game."

Zhilkin had committed to Boston University but is expected to play in the OHL.

Don Mills Flyers underage centre Shane Wright first overall, the Flint Firebirds took his linemate Brennan Othmann second, Erie took Kanata centre Connor Lockhart third and the Barrie Colts chose the first defencememan taken in Brandt Clarke of the Don Mills Flyers fourth overall.

The Sarnia Sting made the unusual move of taking a goaltender highh in the first round in Ben Gaudreau from North Bay, taking him seventh overall.

Guelph has 15 picks in this year's draft, one in each round.
