Guelph's Edwin Javier named IBL pitcher of the week

Intercounty Baseball League sings praises of 22-year-old with 61 strikeouts in 44.1 innings

CAMBRIDGE - The Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) announced its Players of the Week for the week of July 8-14.

Hamilton Cardinals' outfielder Jake Chiaravalle was named Hitter of the Week after batting .500 (6-for-12) with two home runs, five RBI and five runs in three games. He walked twice and added a stolen base. 

For the season, Chiaravalle is slashing .330/.385/.545/.930 with four home runs, 16 RBI, 18 runs and three steals in 88 at bats. 

Guelph's Edwin Javier was named Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 in a pair of appearances, including a complete-game victory over Brantford in which he struck out 14 in a 9-1 win. Javier scattered nine hits and walked two as Guelph won for the eighth time in 10 games. He also earned the victory against Hamilton July 11 after allowing an unearned run in 2.2 innings and struck out six.

Overall, the 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic has an earned-run average of 3.45 with 61 strikeouts in 44.1 innings and a WHIP of 1.35.
