The Guelph Sports Council leadership team has been formed. The group will meet over the coming months to establish a governance structure and executive team.

It's official, the first Guelph Sports Council has formed.

The council has announced 16 appointments as part of its inaugural leadership team.

"The team comprises community leaders from a diverse range of backgrounds and sport associations across Guelph," said Ward 1 city councillor Dan Gibson in a news release.

It comes after an initial meeting in March, where a packed room discussed the need for an entity to represent the voice of the local sports scene.

The council said it has set goals to promote the physical, social and mental health benefits of sport to the broader community, promote enrolment and participation in both recreational and competitive sports, be an engagement and consultation body for city hall and city council, and enhance and promote a vibrant sport tourism culture in Guelph.

Gibson said he won't be part of the leadership team, and wants the group to establish its own autonomy.

The council's leadership team is listed below in alphabetical order:

  • Andrew Bates
  • Caitlin Dunsmore
  • Adam Fanjoy
  • David Frizzell
  • Trisha Gibbons
  • Lana Haines
  • Geoffrey Johnson
  • Vanessa Lodge
  • Jill MacKinnon
  • Sarah Mau
  • Phil McFadden
  • Jeff Millard
  • Jared Pulleyblank
  • Chris Ste-Croix
  • Zack Van Esch
  • Ken Winslow

Over the next few months, the group will work to establish its bylaws and governance structure, and hold a vote to elect executives, including its president and vice-president.
