It might not have been the colour of choice, but Guelph's Kaleigh Rafter got her Olympic medal on Tuesday as Team Canada defeated Mexico 3-2 in the bronze medal game at the Tokyo Olympics.
A member of the 2008 squad that finished fourth (the sport hasn't been part of the Olympics since then), Rafter went hitless in three at bats in the bronze medal game that saw Canada break a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
It is Canada's first Olympic medal in softball.
Japan won gold, defeating the United States 2-0 on Tuesday.
The sport will not be part of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“With all the teams that are there, it's going to be really competitive but we've been in games with them all so I expect us to go and have a shot to compete and stand at the top of the podium,” Rafter, 34, told GuelphToday earlier this year. “That's kind of our goal going in. Why not us? Let's go for it and try to win a gold medal.”
