Guelph-raised Robert Wickens was involved in a terrifying accident during an IndyCar race in Pennsylvania on Sunday.
Reports said Wickens was alert as he was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital after the crash, which happened on the first lap at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania.
Wickens, who still lists Guelph as his home, was attempting to pass Ryan Hunter-Reay when the two cars touched. Wickens' car ended up careening into the wall and then sailed over a low wall and crashed into a safety fence before spinning back on to the track.
Curt Cavin, the vice president of communications for IndyCar, said on the TV broadcast that Wickens was "awake and alert" and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital.
Canadian James Hinchcliffe and Takuma Sato were among the other drivers involved in the wreck.
Hinchcliffe, of Oakville, seemed to be in pain, grabbing his wrists as he slowly left his car.
The race was red flagged and drivers were allowed out of their cars.
