Local swimmer qualifies for Olympics

Evan Van Moerkerke has earned a spot on the Canadian team for this year's Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro. Brazil.
Van Moerkerke, who swims for both the Guelph Marlin Aquatic Club and the University of Guelph Gryphons varsity squad, placed fourth in the men's 100-metre freestyle Friday night in the Canadian Olympic and Paralympics Swimming Trials at Markham.
By finishing in the top four, Van Moerkerke will get a place on the Canadian men's 400m freestyle relay team for the Olympics.
He finished the race in 49.75 seconds while Santo Condorelli won in 48.16 seconds.
Van Moerkerke was one of four Marlin swimmers who raced in A finals Friday night. Danielle D'Aoust placed eighth in the women's 200m butterfly, Samantha Stratford was 10th in the women's 200m individual medley and Gabby Baird was fifth in the para women's 100m butterfly.
