Despite an enthusiastic home crowd, Guelph United FC couldn’t get it done as they fell to Darby FC on Friday night.

In their last game of the regular season, Guelph United once again struggled to find the back of the net on their hometurf. The defending champions played a good first half but would enter half-time tied 0 - 0 after a goal by Jared Agyemang was called back for offside. This would end Agyemang’s two game goal streak.

The second half saw Darby FC take control of the match. The visitors would take the lead in the 53rd minute with a long range shot that caught Guelph keeper Svyatik Artemenko off guard. While Guelph tried to mount a counterattack by subbing in various players, including captain Jace Kotsopoulos who had been sidelined with an injury for the past month, Darby solidified their lead as Andrew Saniga scored shortly after being subbed in.

The match would finish 2 - 0 for Darby FC in a surprising upset by the 13th seeded team. While a win would have secured Guelph’s ticket to the postseason, there is still hope that the reigning champions will get the chance to defend their crown. It is now a waiting game as other League1 Ontario teams play their final games this week.
