Guelph sticks to the ground game in win over York

The Guelph Gryphons got their first win of the season and interim head coach Todd Galloway got his first win as a head coach Monday at Alumni Stadium.

The Gryphs scored 23 points in the second half as they defeated the York Lions 33-18 before a huge orientation week crowd.

"I'm just proud of the guys," said Galloway in a news release.

"The first one feels good but it's also getting the monkey of your back. I told the guys, it's not just me, it's their first win of the season, as well. They proved in the second half that they're a great football team and that they can compete with anybody. They just have to show that every week."

Guelph is now 1-1 on the season. They play in Ottawa on Saturday.

The Gryphons got a receiving touchdown from Kade Belyk, a rushing touchdown from quarterback Theo Landers and an interception returned for a touchdown by linebacker and Guelph native Job Reinhart.

Kicker Gabe Ferraro booted four field goals, including one from 47 yards out.

Guelph totalled 415 yards in total offence, 129 yards of that courtesy of first year running back Jewan Jeffrey, as Guelph ran the ball 44 times in the game.

The only black mark on the scoresheet as far as the Gryphs were concerned was the 15 penalties they took totalling 149 yards.
