Pair of weekend losses drops Royals to 1-4

Guelph will host the winless Brantford Red Sox on Tuesday night

The Guelph Royals had a rough weekend, dropping a pair of games, 5-4 Saturday at home against Welland and 13-3 Sunday in Kitchener.

Sunday, the Panthers pounded out 16 hits and were walked seven times by four different Guelph pitchers.

Former Detroit Tigers hurler Sandy Baez made his first start of the season for Guelph, giving up five earned runs on eight hits over four innings.

JD Williams led the way at the plate for Guelph with three hits. Jeff MacLeod added a pair of hits.

Saturday, the Welland Jackfish played small ball to earn a 5-4 victory over the Royals.

After Sam Cawker walked to start the top of the ninth inning, a pair of bunts moved him to third while his teammates loaded the bases. Royals pitcher Yuki Narita’s first offering to Steven Moretto went to the backstop, scoring Cawker and giving the Jackfish a lead they wouldn’t give up.

Cawker, James Smibert and Matteo Porcellato all had two hits for the Jackfish.

Brando Leroux, Darius Barlas and Noah Roberts each had two hits for the Royals that scored three times in the second inning and once in the seventh.

The Royals host the winless Brantford Red Sox (0-5) on Tuesday night starting at 7:30 p.m.
