Royals begin playoff series against Hamilton on Wednesday

The Guelph Royals lost the team’s final game of the IBL season on Saturday and will face Hamilton in the first round of the playoffs.

Guelph’s loss to Kitchener Saturday has set up a tie-breaking game for top seed between the Kitchener Panthers and Barrie Baycats to determine the final slots in the playoff bracket. That tiebreaker is scheduled for Tuesday.

For Guelph on Saturday, Matt Schmidt went 3-for-5 with a home run and two doubles. He also scored twice. Ricky Murray had three hits and two RBI, Justin Interisano singled twice and scored, and Matthew Pilarczyk added a pair of hits. 

In the end, Kitchener won 6-3 at the final regular season game at David E. Hastings Stadium. Guelph finished the season with a record of 16-20, finishing sixth in the eight-slot IBL playoff race.

Guelph begins its 2019 playoff journey Wednesday on the road against the third-place Hamilton Cardinals.

Game 2: Friday, Aug. 9 at Guelph 7:30 p.m.
Game 3: Saturday, Aug. 10, at Hamilton 2 p.m.
Game 4: Sunday, Aug. 11 at Guelph 1 p.m.
