Royals hold off late rally for a 6-5 win over Welland

Guelph improved to 8-7 with the win

Claudio Custodio struck out 12 over seven innings, and the Guelph Royals survived Welland’s ninth-inning rally for a 6-5 road win Thursday night.

Custodio improved to 4-0 after allowing a run on three hits and a walk. He leads the IBL with 82 strikeouts in 50.2 innings. Brandon Deans recorded the last six outs. After giving up four runs on three hits in the ninth, he struck out James Smibert with the bases loaded to end the game, snap the Jackfish’s five-game win streak and hand Welland its first home loss in 2022.

Offensively, Dalton Pompey went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the top of the ninth. He also scored three times.

J.D. Williams drove in two, while Justin Interisano and Noah Roberts each had an RBI.

Zarley Cina led Welland with two hits, including a home run, and three RBI. Cole Cote drove in the other run.

Jake Harford (5-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out two.

Guelph improved to 8-7, and Welland fell to 12-3.
