The Canadian Elite Basketball League has pushed back the start of the 2021 season.

The Guelph Nighthawks will now start their 14-game regular season on June 28 against Ottawa. It was supposed to start June 5.

"In light of the third wave of the pandemic, which has hit our province and a number of the markets across the league, the 19-day delay to start the season is the right decision given the challenges currently facing our community, the health care system, local business and government," said a news release.

"The revised schedule maintains the integrity of the previously announced 14-game season while ensuring the return of professional basketball at the Sleeman Centre is done so in a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved in this upcoming season.

"Our organization fully supports the league’s decision to delay the start of the 2021 regular season, ensuring we best position ourselves to play a full 14-game regular season, while also providing us with the ability to be a more active member of the Guelph community as we strive to do our part to revitalize our city around the return of pro sports."
