Storm earns first pre-season victory

MISSISSAUGA – The Guelph Storm evened its pre-season record at 1-1 with a 4-3 shootout win over the Mississauga Steelheads Saturday night at the Hershey Centre.

Cam Hillis was the only player to score in the shootout, following misses by the Storm’s Alexey Toropchenko and Ryan Merkley.

Guelph led 2-1 after two periods before Mississauga’s Owen Tippett scored a pair of goals 57 seconds apart in the third to give Mississauga the lead.

Matt Hotchkiss tied it up at 9:49 of the third.

Barret Kirwin, with his second in as many games, and Merkley had the other Guelph goals.

Garrett McFadden picked up a pair of assists.

Mississauga outshot Guelph 39-30, with Anthony Popovich and Nico Daws splitting the goaltending duties for Guelph.

Both teams scored twice on the power play.

Guelph will host Mississauga on Monday at 2 p.m.
