Evan Van Moerkerke took gold in the men's 100 metre freestyle Sunday at the CIS Swimming Championships in Quebec City.

Van Moerkerke, who won silver and was part of a relay bronze the day before, had previously won bronze twice and silver once in the same event at the national championships.

The Tilsonburg native broke his own school record and finished first in the prelims with a time of 48.74 second. In the final he won in a time of 50.84.

After the three days of competition at the 2016 CIS Championships, the Gryphons women's team finished ninth out of 24 schools while the U of G men's team finished ninth out of 20 schools. Last year both teams finished 13th.
