Guelph's Jewish community celebrates Chanukah (9 photos)

Over 100 people gathered at Market Square on Sunday to celebrate the first night of Chanukah

Guelph's Jewish community gathered at Market Square outside of Guelph City Hall on Sunday night to light a nine-foot Menorah in celebration of the first night of Chanukah.

Organized by Chabad of Guelph and lead by led by Rabbi Raphi Steiner, the event drew well over 100 people who were treated to traditional Chanukah food including latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly donuts) and Chanukah Gelt (chocolate coins) following the menorah lighting ceremony.

Remarks were given by Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie, MP LLoyd Longfield and MPP Mike Schreiner.

This was the 5th annual Chanukah celebration held at market square.

This year's theme was 'we're all a light,' which Rabbi Raphi Steiner said is apparent as everyone has undergone lifestyle changes and been tested over the last 18 months and still has allowed the community, parents and leaders to shine.

"After a one-year COVID hiatus, we're excited to be coming together for the 5th annual Chanukah celebration on Market Square, said Rabbi Raphi Steiner in a news release. "This is a really special time for the Jewish community in Guelph, to share our holiday and its meaning with everyone."

Sunday was the first night of the eight-night holiday.
