EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Kris Russell to a four-year contract extension.

Terms of the deal were not released, but it's reportedly worth a total of US$16 million.

Russell, 30, appeared in 68 games with the Oilers last season, posting 13 points (one goal, two assists) and 23 penalty minutes. He led the NHL with 213 blocked shots and averaged 21:13 minutes of ice time per game, ranking third on the team.

The five-foot-10, 170-pound defenceman has 190 points (39 goals, 151 assists) and 210 penalty minutes in 641 career NHL games.

"I love playing (in Edmonton)," Russell said. "The guys in the room are great and I'm excited to get it done. It's a place I want to be."
