Former Calgary Flames head coach Jim Playfair joins Oilers as associate

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers have hired former Calgary Flames head coach Jim Playfair as an associate coach.

Playfair will join a familiar head coach in Dave Tippett, who was hired by the Oilers this off-season. Tippett had Playfair on his Arizona Coyotes staff as an associate coach from 2011-17.

Prior to his time with the Coyotes, the native of Fort St. James, B.C., was with the Flames as head coach in 2006-07 and an assistant from 2003-06 and 2007-09.

Playfair, 55, has been coaching in professional hockey for 21 years.

The Oilers drafted Playfair, a former defenceman, in the first round (20th overall) of the 1982 draft. He ended up playing two games with the Oilers as part of a 21-game NHL playing career.
