QUEBEC — The Quebec Remparts have called a news conference on Thursday amid speculation that goaltending great Patrick Roy will return to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League club.

Roy acted as part-owner, coach and general manager of the Remparts from 2005 to 2013, winning a Memorial Cup in 2006. He has been out of hockey since acting as coach and vice-president of hockey operations for the Colorado Avalanche from 2013 to 2016.

Talk of the 52-year-old Roy returning to the Remparts began two weeks ago when Philippe Boucher resigned as coach and GM. Roy has since been spotted at QMJHL playoff games.

The Quebec City native was a fiery presence behind the bench during is tenure with the Remparts, where he maintained a .640 regular season winning percentage in 544 games.

Roy is one of the top goaltenders in NHL history.

While popularizing the "butterfly" style, he had a career 551-315-131 record with the Montreal Canadiens and the Avalanche from 1984 to 2003, winning two Stanley Cups with each club. He is the only player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP three times. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

Roy won the Jack Adams Trophy as NHL coach of the year with Colorado in 2013, but left the team in 2016, saying he no longer had input in personnel decisions.
