StFX beats UNB, Alberta tops Saskatchewan to advance to men's hockey final

FREDERICTON — A pair of overtime victories Saturday decided who will play for the David Johnston University Cup.

The StFX X-Men advanced to the Canadian university men's hockey final with a 5-4 win over the UNB Varsity Reds and the Alberta Golden Bears topped the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 in the second semifinal.

The championship game is scheduled for Sunday.

Adam Stevens scored 9:13 into overtime to lead the X-Men. Holden Cook had a goal and an assist and Anthony Difruscia, Santino Centorame and Cole MacDonald also scored. Michael Clarke had three assists.

"We play these guys enough to know that every game is a battle," said StFX head coach Brad Peddle.

Tyler Boland, Chris Caissy, Mark Simpson and Christopher Clappert scored for UNB, which will face Saskatchewan in the bronze medal game Sunday.

Chase Marchand stopped 46 shots for the win. Alex Dubeau made 29 saves in defeat.

"As a goalie you are trying to stay as calm as you can," said Marchand. "It was easy to stay calm with our guys playing as calm as they did."

Trevor Cox had the winner for Alberta in the day's second semi, 3:15 into the extra period. Luke Philp and Graeme Craig scored power-play goals in the third for the Golden Bears, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

Taran Kozun stopped 33 shots.
