Telfer helps York9 FC to first-ever win and to move on in Canadian Championship

TORONTO — Ryan Telfer's goal in the 71st minute lifted the Canadian Premier League's York9 FC to a 1-0 win over AS Blainville on Wednesday night to advance to the second qualifying round of the Canadian Championship.

It's the first victory in York9 FC's short history. The team has started the inaugural CPL season with a loss and two draws.

York9 FC will face fellow CPL side FC Edmonton, June 5 and 12 for a chance to move on to the next stage of the expanded national cup competition.

The arrival of the CPL has resulted in an expanded tournament format this year with five rounds, 13 teams and 24 matches.

Teams from League 1 Ontario and Quebec's PLSQ joined the field last year with Blainville beating the Oakville Blue Devils before falling to the USL's Ottawa Fury. Toronto FC went on to win the title for the seventh time, earning a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Also Wednesday, HFX Wanderers dropped its second leg to League1 Ontario’s Vaughan Azzurri 1-0, yet advanced on the away goals rule, two-game aggregate 3-3

The Wanderers will play its next Canadian Championship match against Valour FC on June 5.

Cavalry FC beat the visiting Pacific FC in Calgary 2-1 and advanced on an aggregate 4-1 score. The Calgary-based CPL side will face Hamilton's Forge FC in the next round.
