Toronto's Andrew Nembhard captains Canada in U18 FIBA Americas championship

TORONTO — Andrew Nembhard headlines Canada's team for next week's FIBA U18 Americas championship in St. Catharines, Ont.

Canadian coach Dave Smart released his 12-man roster on Thursday, ahead of Canada's opening game against Argentina on Sunday.

Nembhard, a 6-4 guard from Toronto and Canada's captain, played alongside young Canadian star R.J. Barrett at Florida's Montverde Academy, which captured its fourth U.S. high school title in March. The pair also suited up for the world team at the prestigious Nike Hoop Summit in April.

Canada is in Group B with Chile, Ecuador, and Argentina. Group A has the Dominican Republic, Panama, Puerto Rico, and the United States.

The tournament is the qualifier for next summer's FIBA U19 World Cup. Canada won a historic gold medal at the World Cup in Cairo last summer, and is ranked No. 2 in the world in the FIBA youth men's rankings.

Smart, the Carleton Ravens' head coach, will be joined by assistants Michael Meeks, Jamie McNeilly and Chris Cheng.
