Born October 15, 1955 in Galt, Ontario; died suddenly January 17, 2023 in Bell’s Bay on Lago Blanco, Tierra del Fuego, Chile with his devoted wife, Anna Shaftoe, at his side. He will be sorely missed by Anna, his brother William (wife, Jerre) of Ancaster and his nieces and nephews in whose lives he always took a sincere interest; Mike (wife, Adrienne), Greg, Chris (wife, Melissa), Harry, Sam, Hugh, Ronan, Miriam and Pierre. Predeceased by parents Alice and John (Jack) Bell, and brother John (wife,Susan). A mechanical engineer from Queen’s University, after graduation, Bob worked overseas in Chile for 5 years. On his return to Guelph, he worked as a manufacturing engineer for a number of local businesses while establishing the Wike Bicycle Company. His interest in inclusion led him to design special needs trailers so that all could enjoy the benefits of the outdoors. Now a company with more than 25 years history, in 2018, Wike was named a Gold Award winner for innovation for the Wike Salamander Stroller Bike at the EuroBike Awards, a rare honour for a North American bike company. Bob was elected to Guelph city council in 2006 and served 16 years representing Ward 1. He was a fierce advocate for active transportation including the promotion of hiking and bicycle trails. He encouraged fiscal responsibility and made efforts to promote the development of social and affordable housing. He believed that being a good citizen included being of service to his community. Where others saw insurmountable challenges, Bob saw an opportunity for a creative solution. Whether it was his or your problem, he always found the time to provide practical and sage advice, and he supported others in the realisation of their dreams. He attracted friends for life and took great pleasure in their company. Bob had a special appreciation for the country of Chile and its people. Anna wishes to extend thanks to the many Chileans who have provided assistance and extended great kindness to her at this time. Donations in Bob’s name can be made to the Guelph Hiking Trail Club and Community Living Guelph Wellington. Details of a celebration of life will follow.
