It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we, the Chappel family, announce the passing of Roy, lovingly surrounded by his family, at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph, on September 19th, 2018.
Roy was the cherished husband of Sheila (nee Ketko) formerly of South Porcupine, Ontario. In 2016, along with extended family and friends, they celebrated their Golden 50th Anniversary surrounded by love, happiness and thankfulness. This was the greatest celebration for Roy.
He was a proud and devoted father to Paul, Mark (Lisa) and Darren (Cathy) Chappel of Guelph, and will be missed by his grandchildren Braedan, Olivia, Isabella, and Alexander, along with his many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, both on the Chappel and Ketko side of the family.
Roy always spoke of how influential his parents and siblings were. His formative early years during the tail-end of the depression were spent on College Avenue (formerly Guelph Township), growing up right across the street from the University of Guelph, an idyllic setting.
Roy was the son of the late Herbert James (1983), a skilled carpenter, and his beloved mother, Margaret Campbell (nee Tiffin, 1987), known to Bert as Daisy. Predeceased by siblings, Herbert, (2003), Margaret, (Clyde Campbell, 1970; and George Kermath, 1991) Betty, (1979) (Bob Petrie), and Dennis Chappel, (2009). Roy is survived by his brothers, Dr. Reginald Chappel (late Muriel), and Dr. Clifford Chappel (Marilyn).
Roy learned at an early age, the importance of hard work, community service, helping his family and many others, and whenever he could lend a hand, he was always there to help.
Roy owned and operated Central Printing Services on Norfolk Street in downtown Guelph. After learning the printing trade, he went on to assist hundreds of customers, serving their printing needs, for over 4 fun-filled decades. Dad’s career in the printing business was characterized by hard work, rock solid integrity and a commitment to dealing with all people in an honest manner.
Roy also spent many tireless hours volunteering with various social clubs including the Guelph Jaycees, the Kinsmen Club of Guelph, Stanley Stick Hockey Association, and the Guelph Minor Hockey Association. He was part of a team dedicated to establishing the annual Guelph Santa Claus Parade, in addition to the Guelph Senior’s “Tour of Lights”, both of which continue to be enjoyed by countless families throughout the community. A lifelong hockey fan, Roy was an unwavering, ardent supporter of the Guelph Storm Hockey Club (Thanks John and Bill for the memories, and Go Storm Go!). Dad never missed a chance to see the Storm games, but was equally excited about watching his sons play hockey, coaching his team (Central Printing Devils), keeping the refs in check, and cheering his kids on during their games.
The family would like to sincerely thank Drs. Stemerdink and Noor, and the incredible nursing and PSW staff at St. Joseph’s Health Centre during his transition to life at Lilac Lane, and for their kindness and loving care during the past 7 months. We are eternally grateful to our relatives and friends for all their love and support during this difficult time.
The family will receive friends at WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph, on Friday, September 28th, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Memorial service will be celebrated at All Saints Lutheran Anglican Church, 210 Silvercreek Parkway North, Guelph on Saturday, September 29th, 2018 at 11 am. Cremation has taken place.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation, Guelph, All Saints Lutheran Anglican Church, Guelph, or the Parkinson Canada Charity, would be sincerely appreciated by the family in lieu of flowers.
