John Brian Derbyshire of Burlington, Ontario, passed away peacefully aged 83 years on Saturday July 16th, 2016 at the Carpenter Hospice following a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ishbel, his daughter Jane (Joe) and son John (Carol). He will be sadly missed by his granddaughter Heather, his relatives in the U.K., and his friends. Brian grew up in Glossop, near Manchester, England. He graduated from the Royal Veterinary College at the University of London in 1955, and later received his PhD in 1960. He worked at the Agricultural Research Council Institute for Research on Animal Diseases in Compton, England. In 1971, he emigrated to Canada to join the faculty of the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, where his continued research resulted in the publication of numerous papers. In addition, he taught undergraduate veterinary virology and the history of veterinary medicine, and supervised many graduate students at the College. He became an Emeritus Professor and continued research on Canadian veterinary history. Above all, he was a devoted family man, who loved to travel and explore new places. His sense of humor and desire to help those around him will always be remembered. Family and friends are invited to the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph, where visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 from 1-2 p.m., with a funeral service to follow in our chapel. Cremation. A private family graveside service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Carpenter Hospice in Burlington would be appreciated by the family.
