Alan James Adamson Hughes passed away peacefully at Hospice Wellington Saturday June 9th, 2018 surrounded by his loving, devoted family, after a long and challenging journey with Huntington disease. He was born in Baillieston, Scotland in 1955 and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1959. Alan graduated from the University of Guelph with an honours BA and MA in English Literature, and was employed by the Waterloo County Board of Education as a much respected teacher from 1980 until 2004. Alan loved photography, camping, travelling and cycling. He was a generous and helpful neighbourhood bike mechanic for family and friends.

Alan is survived by his wife Helen, sons Ahren (Aimee Charbonneau), Gavin (Allyson Bradley), daughter Kaitlin (Adolf Coetzer) and by his two adored granddaughters Natalie and Isobel Hughes. Brother to Elaine Mignacca (Ben) and brother-in-law to David and Nancy Strachan and Marian and Perry Hughes. Uncle to several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A private family ceremony will be held this week and a celebration of Alan’s life will be planned for friends at a future date.
