1928 – 2020
Passed away peacefully at Hospice Wellington on Thursday November 26, 2020. Loving and cherished wife of the late H. James Plant (2018). Loving mom to her children and their spouses, Paul and Sandra Herriot, Robb and Lisa Herriot, grandmother to Maya and Ella Jean Herriot. Stepdaughters Marilyn (Andrew Burans), Barbara (Graham Clarke) and Shirley (Charles Titley), step grandchildren Christopher Burans (Lori), Jamie Burans (Stephanie), Shawn Clarke (Karol Anne Canuel), Stephanie Clarke (Jeff Sevenson), step great-grandchildren Brayden, Blakely and Noah Burans.
Predeceased by her parents, and sisters Peggy Hickingbottom and Janet Sullivan.
Born in Nottingham, England, Sherrie was an active member in the junior fire brigade during world war II and went on to contribute to the Nottingham Evening Post as a Junior News reporter. Her grace, beauty and athleticism were exemplified during her years as a Professional figure skater touring Great Britain and Europe. It was in the rink that she met her first husband, James (Jim) Herriot, a professional hockey player from Winnipeg, playing in England. After their marriage in Nottingham, they moved to Canada in the 1950’s settling in Burlington, Ontario. She continued to share her passion and love of figure skating by teaching and coaching both in Burlington and Guelph. It was in Burlington that she raised her family and became an active member of the community. As a member of the Roseland Club in Burlington she pursued her love of tennis. In 1979 she married James (Jim) Plant and lived in Ottawa for many years. Together, they enjoyed frequent travel and visited many places both in and outside Canada, while wintering in Florida. Sherrie was an active member of the Royal Ottawa Club and played golf up until a few years ago. She pursued many causes and associations including The May Court Club of Ottawa, the Red Hat Society, Animal Aid and PETA. She was influential in advocating for animal rights and to banish animal testing. Through her advocacy and determined correspondence she contributed to changing the way pharmaceutical companies treated animals for testing purposes. Sherrie had a beautiful voice and sang songs to entertain and engage those around her, often improving upon the original lyrics much to the delight of listeners. In late 2018, Sherrie relocated to Guelph to be closer to her children and sister. The last few years she spent her time enjoying beautiful walks, country drives and faithfully watching Lawrence Welk every Sunday. Throughout Sherrie’s long life she advocated to be the change you want to see in this world. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
