Pletsch Helen DN

Aged 82 of Guelph Ontario, passed away on Monday, August 27th, 2018 surrounded by her family.

Daughter of George and Alice Kaufman, she grew up in the small rural town of Mildmay, Ontario. She met and married the love of her life Donald Pletsch in 1959.  They had three children: Carolyn, Suzanne and Steven. But Helen’s attention was recently focused on her five grandchildren Alexandra (Allie), Bent, Dawn, Andrew and Erica.

Her calling and career was nursing, and she graduated from nursing school in 1956. After completing additional qualifications in public health at the University of Western Ontario she went on to save the world, at least her corner of it! In 1962 Helen and Don set off for Sierra Leone where until 1973, they contributed their knowledge and expertise to people in need. Helen’s practice was exclusively for women and children. She travelled to local villages monthly and held weekly clinics at the back door of her home. Her contribution saved many lives.  After their return to Canada she spent the rest of her working life as a home care nurse.

Helen’s other job was “pastor’s wife,” a demanding, social and supporting role- a challenge which she rose to extremely well.  Helen was also a talented fabric artist. She loved to entertain, travel and cook. Her books were her best friends. In all of her roles- as wife, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend; we will all miss her, very, very much.

Friends will be received at the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph, on Thursday, August 30th, 2018 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held at Speedside United Church, 5903 Wellington County Rd. 29, Rockwood, Ontario on Friday, August 31st, 2018 at 1 pm.

Memorial contributions to the Hospice Wellington or Speedside United Church would be appreciated.
