Stewart Gertrude

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful Mom and Grama on Thursday August 26, 2021, at her home and in the presence of her loving family. Predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Coulter Stewart (2007), she is survived by her daughters Lynn Meihm and her husband David, and Elaine Copp, and her grandchildren Evan, Mark (Alana), and Rachel (Manni) Meihm, Lily and Adelaide Copp, and great granddaughter Avery Meihm.

Gertie was born in Regina on October 21, 1925, to her hardworking German immigrant parents, Selma and Clemens Kinzel, where, growing up with her sister Margaret, she learned some of her many talents such as baking, knitting and sewing. After marrying Bill and living in small town Saskatchewan for several years, the family moved to Guelph in 1969, where she enjoyed a long administrative career at the OVC. Following her retirement, she devoted her time to her grandchildren and cheering them on in their various activities, baking her cinnamon buns, knitting scarves and blankets for family and friends, travelling, and attending musical productions with her close friends and family.  Gertie was blessed with wonderful neighbours and friends and enjoyed her many grand dogs through the years. We will all miss her love, kindness, strength and support.

Special thanks to Dr. David Hood for his unprecedented care throughout the years and especially in her final days, and to the Bayshore PSWs who attended to her with compassion and care during her final weeks at home.  As per her wishes, there will be a small graveside service with immediate family in the coming days and we will celebrate her life with a special dinner at her favourite restaurant, The Keg. If desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society 1-800-268-8874, or a charity of your choice. May she rest in peace. Arrangements entrusted to GILCHRIST CHAPEL – McIntyre & Wilkie Funeral Home, One Delhi Street, Guelph, (519-824-0031).  We invite you to leave your memories and donations online at: www.gilchristchapel.com and they will be forwarded to the family.
